Health & Safety Policies
Sample Policy Document
This document is intended as a professional template modeled after common policies used by licensed childcare centers. Little Lyons Childcare should review, edit, and approve all policies before implementation.
Our Commitment
The health, safety, and well-being of every child is our highest priority. We maintain a nurturing environment that promotes learning while following applicable state licensing requirements and recognized childcare best practices.
Daily Health Screening
Children should arrive healthy and ready to participate. Staff may perform a visual wellness check each morning. Children showing signs of illness may not be admitted.
Illness Exclusion
Children should remain home if they have a fever of 100.4°F or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, a contagious rash, unexplained lethargy, or symptoms of a communicable illness. Children may generally return after being symptom-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication or as directed by a healthcare provider.
Medications
Prescription medications will only be administered with written parent authorization and in the original labeled container. Non-prescription medications require written authorization and must comply with applicable licensing regulations.
Immunizations
Families are expected to maintain immunization and health records as required by Kansas licensing regulations unless an approved exemption applies.
Allergies
Parents must notify the center of all allergies and provide an action plan when necessary. Staff work to reduce exposure to known allergens and respond promptly to allergic reactions.
Handwashing & Sanitation
Children and staff wash hands frequently throughout the day. Toys, learning materials, bathrooms, eating areas, and high-touch surfaces are cleaned and sanitized on a regular schedule.
Safe Sleep
Infants are placed on their backs to sleep in approved cribs following current safe sleep recommendations. Soft bedding, pillows, and loose blankets are not permitted unless medically authorized.
Outdoor Play
Children participate in outdoor activities daily when weather permits. Outdoor equipment is routinely inspected and children are supervised at all times.
Emergency Preparedness
The center maintains emergency response procedures for fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, lockdowns, and evacuations. Drills are conducted as required by licensing regulations.
Authorized Pick-Up
Children are released only to parents, legal guardians, or individuals authorized in writing. Photo identification may be requested.
Accidents & Injuries
Minor injuries receive appropriate first aid and parents are notified. Serious injuries or medical emergencies are addressed immediately by contacting emergency medical services and the child’s emergency contacts.
Nutrition
Nutritious meals and snacks are served in accordance with program guidelines. Food substitutions are made when possible for documented allergies or medical needs.
Child Supervision
Children are supervised at all times by qualified staff using age-appropriate staff-to-child ratios required by licensing regulations.
Reporting Concerns
Families are encouraged to communicate any health or safety concerns promptly so they can be addressed in partnership with staff.
Policy Updates
These policies may be revised as regulations or best practices change. Families will be notified of significant updates.
